Boxt has worked out how to calculate how much it costs to run a fan - and it might not be as little as you think
As the UK heatwave continues with temperatures hovering around 30C, Brits are seeking cost-effective ways to stay cool.
Here's how to calculate the cost of running a fan. Currently, the average Ofgem electricity unit costs 24.5p, but this could be higher depending on your location, whether you're on a fixed rate, or if you have a tariff that changes price by day. Using a credit meter typically incurs higher charges, reports the Express.Next, determine the kW output of your fan by checking its wattage, which can be found on the fan itself or in the instruction manual.
Over an eight-hour workday, that's a total of 14.32p. Tower fans are slightly more economical, consuming on average 0.0565 kWh, which translates to about 1.38p per hour. Keeping one on for a full day would tack an additional 33.12p onto your energy bill. Standing fans are even more efficient, using just 0.0425 kWh per hour and costing roughly 1.04p for each hour of use. If you let it run throughout the night, you'd be spending about 8.32p.
Andy Kerr, the founder of BOXT, commented: "As temperatures rise, consumers often look for ways to cut their bills. However, it is possible to cost-effectively cool your household with fans during the summer months. Whilst the average 110w floor fan uses 2.7p of energy an hour or 64.8p a day, which would add £20.05 to your monthly energy bills, this price can be lowered if you are strategic with your fan and utilise their strengths.
