It would have been a lot easier for everyone involved if the Mariners just closed out the Blue Jays in Game 6 and punched their first-ever World Series ticket.

Toronto Blue Jays' Addison Barger, right, rounds the bases after hitting a two-run home run against the Seattle Mariners during the third inning in Game 6 of baseball's American League Championship Series in Toronto, Sunday, Oct.

19, 2025. It would have been a lot easier for everyone involved if the Mariners just closed out the Blue Jays in Game 6 and punched their first-ever World Series ticket. Easier for the fans, everyone involved with the M's -- heck, even the collective blood pressure of western Washington. No, this team has always wanted to take it down to the wire. Look at the winner-take-all Game 5 with Detroit in the ALDS -- even that needed 15 innings. Even in the regular season, playoff hopes seemed dim, then the M's rolled off a staggering 17 wins out of 18 games to fly by the Wild Card and win the AL West for the first time since 2001. "We did Game 5 in the first round, might as well do Game 7 this time. It's what you dream of," Bryce Miller told me. And that's just on the surface, this team has had a flair for the dramatic all season. It feels like everyone has had some sort of walk-off or key moment in the regular season or playoffs. So, for the potential first-ever World Series bid to come down to Game 7? It feels like it's meant to be.When I asked Josh Naylor about that, he smiled and said, "It does feel like it's God's plan." And in that winner-take-all Game 7, with the hopes and dreams of an entire city on the line, the Mariners turn to George Kirby to start. "Super honored. Going to go out there and give it my best," Kirby said, adding, "I love pitching under pressure and super glad I'm able to get Game 7."
