24, 2026, in Fort Worth.Service’s Fort Worth office. January wasn’t faring much better before the winter storm, with only 0.02 inches of rainfall before the 22nd of the month. But a decent amount of rain hit DFW International Airport before temperatures dropped below freezing, bringing about half an inch of water. The last few days of the month ended drier, keeping the precipitation total for the month at 0.93 inches. It’s less than half of the 30-year average for January precipitation, which is 2.53 inches, and more dry days are forecast.Matt Stalley, a meteorologist with the weather service, said that while recent months have been even drier than normal, winter is generally a dry time for North Texas.“When you already typically have a dry time of year and then it’s even drier than normal, it’s never a great sign in terms of drought conditions,” Stalley said. This drier weather could be leaving us by spring, though. A forecast last month from the Climate Prediction Center, a part of the National Weather Service, said the Pacific Ocean has a 75% chance of transitioning to neutral conditions by the end of the January-March period., but the average temperature for the month was almost exactly normal. D-FW airport reported an average temperature of 46.4 degrees for January, compared to the 30-year normal of 46.3.Julia is a breaking news reporter with the Dallas Morning News, currently focused on covering weather and climate.
