The Yankees are focused on adding pitching this offseason, but Juan Soto is at the top of their priority list.
The Dodgers reportedly signed Blake Snell to a $182 million deal over five years, raising the bar on the top pitchers in free agency this winter. If Snell was able to get a contract with an average annual value of $36.4 million — he signed for $182 million over five years — then what is Corbin Burnes going to earn on the open market?
Burnes is almost two years younger than Snell. Both carry Cy Young upside, but while Snell has been a boom-or-bust starter when it comes to durability, Burnes is as consistent as it gets. In each of the last four seasons, he’s churned out 28-plus starts — he’s thrown more than 193 innings in each of his last three campaigns — while earning Cy Young Award votes.
It means Max Fried, the other top left-hander on the market this winter, won’t be cheap either. He’s also 30 with an impressive track record. The next tier of starters — Sean Manaea and Jack Flaherty, for instance — will benefit from this, too. Even the White Sox can use Snell’s contract as they negotiate possible trade packages for their lefty Garrett Crochet this offseason.
Whatever happens with Soto, the Yankees are poised to add a starting pitcher. Owner Hal Steinbrenner said earlier this month that the team would be keeping a close eye on the starting pitcher market. They need to address the back of their bullpen as well. If Burnes, Fried and more end up out of reach, the Yankees could attack the trade market or seek out a reclamation project or veteran on a shorter-term deal.
