Houston Zoo employees discovered someone had cut a four-inch gap in the brown pelican exhibit Monday, a week after a man stole monkeys from a zoo in Dallas.
Zookeepers on discovered the gap in the mesh of the habitat in the children’s zoo, according to a zoo statement. Employees determined the animals were still secure and unharmed, and alerted the security team. Investigators believe someone vandalized the habitat, they said.
Police received a report about the vandalism around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Houston Police Department spokesperson. Zoo administrators told investigators they weren’t sure when the damage occurred, or who might have done it, officials said.Zookeepers also examined other animal areas, but discovered no similar vandalism, according to the zoo.
“The Houston Zoo is prepared to prosecute to the fullest extent allowed by law anyone who compromises the animals in our care,” officials said. The news is the latest instance in Texas of someone vandalizing a zoo.that a man was arrested in Dallas, accused of taking two monkeys from the zoo. He is also linked to the escape of a small leopard escaping and a gash in the fence of another monkey exhibit.
Investigators found the two stolen monkeys, Bella and Finn, in the closet of a vacant house in a Dallas suburb, according to the Associated Press.
