The Houston Housing Authority board voted Tuesday to reopen its waiting list for public housing Jan. 15. It will be the first time applications will be open since August of 2018, when they were last closed due to the volume of demand.
Residents walk through Cuney Homes on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022 in Houston. After Cuney Homes was awarded a Choice Neighborhood Initiative Planning grant by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, residents have begun discussing what improvements they would like to see at their public housing community. In fact, there are still roughly 9,800 households on the waiting list for public housing, but some public housing developments have longer waiting lists than others.
In January, the waiting lists will open for 10 public housing developments: Bellerive Senior Apartments, Cuney Homes, Ewing Apartments, Independence Heights Apartments, Kennedy Place, Irvinton Village, Kelly Village, Lyerly Senior Apartments, Heatherbrook Apartments and Lincoln Park. Both Bellerive Senior Apartments and Lyerly Senior Apartments will be open to tenants 62 and older.
Applications will be available online, at the main housing authority office at 2640 Fountain View Dr. and at the offices of each housing development. Those interested will be able to join the waiting list for as many of the properties as they choose, said the housing authority's chief executive, David A. Northern Sr. There will also be accommodations for all language needs in the application process, he explained.
The fate of one of the public housing sites, Kelly Village, is in flux — a proposed expansion of I-45 would require relocating the development's residents, but it is unclear how that expansion will proceed as it continues to face opposition.
After Jan. 15, applications will remain open until the housing authority has enough applications for each size of unit available at every property, Northern explained. There will be prior notice before applications close. Applications open infrequently — before 2018,Northern asked any people or organizations seeking further information about the application process reach out to the housing authority at [email protected].
