Officer accused of shooting wife no longer city employee, Houston police chief says

As of Tuesday, Galib Chowdhury no longer was a Houston police officer, officials said.

Chowdhury, 31, had been charged with one count of aggravated assault of a family member causing significant bodily injury after being arrested on suspicion of shooting his wife at their northwestern Harris County apartment. Investigators maintained he shot his wife in the face and hand during an argument before calling 911 and telling the operator he’d accidentally shot her when someone had been breaking into their apartment.

Investigators, however, said they did not find any evidence supporting his claim a break-in had taken place., Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said in the hours after the shooting. But his employment had not officially been terminated until Tuesday. Doug Griffith, president of the Houston Police Officers Union, said the chief must provide an officer 48 hours’ notice before officially terminating his or her employment if they have been charged with a crime.
