House Speaker Mike Johnson seeks to retain his position in the new Congress, facing potential opposition despite support from the president-elect. With a slim Republican majority, Johnson needs near-unanimous GOP votes to secure reelection. Rep. Chip Roy expresses doubt about Johnson's ability to garner enough support, calling for a party conference to unite. The vote, the first of the new Congress, will determine Johnson's leadership and proceed before any other business, including the certification of Trump's election win.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson , R-La., talks to reporters after passing the funding bill to avert the government shutdown at the Capitol in Washington, Friday, Dec. 20, 2024. House Speaker Mike Johnson wants to retain the speaker's gavel into 2025, but there could be some opposition despite support from the president-elect.
A new Congress convenes on Friday, meaning Johnson, R-La., will face another political test: being reelected to the job. Republicans will hold a slim majority in the 119th Congress, meaning just two Republicans opposing the vote could block Johnson from reelection. Johnson will need almost every Republican vote to win, and one member of the party has already stated he won't be voting for the Louisiana Republican., writing, "Even if Mike’s entire goal is to do everything Trump wants without debate or question , he’s not going to be good at it.""Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement ."Rep. Chip Roy, "Right now, I don't believe that he has the votes on Friday and I think we need to have the conference get together so that we can get united," he said.Johnson has expressed his confidence in the Friday vote as Democrats are expected to vote for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y. The vote is the first of the new Congress and no other business can be conducted until complete, including the certification of Trump’s election win on Monday. The situation calls back to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy being booted from the speakership in Oct. 2023. Just eight Republicans who sided with Democrats were enough for McCarthy's removal, which led to Johnson’s ascent. McCarthy had GOP enemies at the time, led by former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz. It took 15 rounds of voting over multiple days, and personal phone calls from Trump, to convince Gaetz to stand down.
