Political News and Conservative Analysis About Congress, the President, and the Federal Government
, including one amendment proposed by Rep. Andy Biggs that would prohibit the use of federal funding for Mayorkas’s salary as well as another by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene that wouldto just $1. Both amendments will be attached to the annual appropriations bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security.
“My amendment would effectively fire Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as secretary of homeland security for the atrocious job that he is doing with our southern border and overall security of our nation,” Greene said on the House floor on Wednesday. The amendments come as House Republicans have repeatedly targeted Mayorkas over his policies at the southern border, blaming the top Biden administration official for record-high illegal immigration and increased crime caused by those migrants.“Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed my impeachment articles against Secretary Mayorkas, making him the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached since 1876,” Greene said.
The amendments will be included in the appropriations bill funding DHS, which is set for a full vote in the House on Friday.Lawmakers are also targeting the salaries of other top Biden administration officials in other appropriations bills up for votes this week, including those for Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The proposals would also decrease their salaries to just $1.
Even if the three appropriations bills manage to make it through the House with those amendments included, they are unlikely to be considered by the Senate in their current form, setting the stage for a drawn-out spending fight that could extend past the election in November. Senate leaders and the White House could also seek to punt the funding deadline of Oct. 1 until after it is known who will be president in 2025 and which party will be in control of the upper chamber.
