House Speaker Mike Johnson is appointing two far-right Republicans to the powerful House Intelligence Committee.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson , R-La., and other Republican leaders meet with reporters to condemn former President Donald Trump 's guilty conviction in a New York court last week, at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, June 4, 2024. Johnson also called President Joe Biden the worst president in American history.
“I look forward to providing not only a fresh perspective, but conducting actual oversight - not blind obedience to some facets of our Intel Community that all too often abuse their powers, resources, and authority to spy on the American People,” Perry said in a statement. The presence of Jackson and Perry on the committee could damage the trust between the president and the committee in handling classified information, said Ira Goldman, a former Republican congressional aide who worked as a counsel to the intelligence committee in the 1970s and 1980s.
