House panel acts in a last-ditch effort to stop changes to Pa.’s charter school law

The GOP-controlled House Education Committee restated its disapproval of changes to the state's charter school law that Gov. Tom Wolf's administration championed and that won approval from the Independent Regulatory Review Commission.

Democrats on the committee, however, agreed with Wolf that the rule changes were necessary to provide clarity and accountability to the governance of these taxpayer-funded independent public schools. However, House Education Committee Chairman Curt Sonney, R-Erie County, said the committee’s action on Wednesday is an essential part of the process to preserve the final opportunity to try to prevent the rules from being enacted either through a governor’s change of heart or a veto override.

The legislature has failed countless times over the past two decades to rewrite the charter law to address concerns that have both charter and district school officials have with it. That includes several unsuccessful tries by the Wolf Administration to move that effort to a conclusion.
