Olivia Cooke as Alicent and Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 3.
With House of the Dragon Season 3 edging closer, the wait for HBO’s fiery return to Westeros is almost over — though details about the new season have been scarce. That’s why fans will be thrilled to hear Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hightower, tease what’s ahead in an interview with Collider’s Therese Lacson while promoting her new project, The Girlfriend.
She told Collider: “Well, I think I can say for the show that it is, you know, it starts off with a bang. The first two eps were essentially supposed to be our finale last year. So you can just imagine coming into that sort of energy. It’s bigger and more ferocious than ever before, I think is what I can say.” It’s a telling update that lines up with comments from showrunner Ryan Condal, who has been promising a massive expansion in scope. On his podcast, Condal admitted he underestimated just how much bigger Season 3 would be compared to Season 2. Considering that the Dance of the Dragons is now fully underway after two seasons of build-up, “bigger and more ferocious” is exactly what fans have been hoping to hear. What Can We Expect From House of the Dragon Season 3? Season 2 ended over a year ago, and while it featured shocking betrayals and one unforgettable dragon battle at Rook’s Rest, it was also criticized for being light on action. Key clashes like the Battle of the Burning Mill were left off-screen, and the finale didn’t deliver the large-scale war sequence viewers expected. With Cooke confirming that the opening two episodes of Season 3 were originally designed as Season 2’s finale, the show seems ready to correct that course immediately. Condal has also teased that Season 3’s eight episodes will cover four major events from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, likely including the Battle of the Gullet. If true, it suggests a faster pace, higher stakes, and more time spent on what House of the Dragon does best: dragons tearing across the skies while the Targaryen civil war rips the Seven Kingdoms apart. And as we know, when the Targaryens fall out with each other, things never go quietly into the night, but with... well, fire and blood. Buckle up, folks, it's going to be a very hard watch.
