Hong Kong Airport suspended departing flights for a second day as protesters staged a new rally in one of Asia's busiest transport hubs.

Protesters returned to Hong Kong Airport on Tuesday in the latest round of anti-government demonstrations to have rocked the city.: Hong Kong's airport authority suspended departures for a second day after thousands of anti-government protesters staged a new rally in the airport and blocked security gates.

"Terminal operations at Hong Kong International Airport have been seriously disrupted as a result of the public assembly at the airport today," Airport Authority Hong Kong said in aProtesters occupied the airport's departure area and were seen blocking passengers from passing through security using barriers made from baggage trolleys.

The airport, one of the world's busiest transport hubs, had suspended hundreds of departing flights on Monday and suspended transport to the airport after protesters staged a rally inside the building. The airport had reopened on Tuesday morning. Small scale demonstrations have been ongoing at the airport since Friday but the crowded swelled on Monday following a violent crackdown by police on demonstrations elsewhere in the city on Sunday evening. Protesters have used banners at the airport demonstration to draw international attention to police firing tear gas inside a subway station, the use of plainclothes officers, and a female protester being blind in one eye at a rally on Sunday.

Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam speaking at a press conference on Tuesday morning warned that the protests risked pushing the city into an"abyss' but refused to answer reporters questions over alleged police misconduct or her handling of the most serious unrest in the city since its handover to China in 1997.: “Riot activities have pushed Hong Kong to the brink of no return,” said Lam, as she accused protesters of attacking officers with “malice intention.
