Barnaby Joyce said he was in disbelief over Mark McGowan’s call to hold a National Cabinet meeting in China, admitting he thought it was a story from the satirical Betoota Advocate.
The Western Australia Premier made headlines again on Wednesday when he made the comments, as his controversial trip to Beijing continues.
The former deputy prime minister added that he even responded with a laughing emoji and that it was “hilarious”.“I thought ‘oh yeah that’s Betoota Advocate’ which is, as you now, a satirical column you see online.Mr Joyce said when he found out it was in fact real, he could not “fathom” how Mr McGowan could think of the idea.“To the people of Western Australia, I know you think he walks on water, but he is walking on water all the way to Beijing,” Mr Joyce said.
In 2021-22, Western Australia and China traded $143.6 billion worth of goods, with the state accounting for 53 per cent of Australia’s trade that year. “So, I like Mathias Cormann, he had the same view as me, but he had no sway… on this issue. He had a lot of sway, but on this issue, he was the odd one out,” he said in the footage.
