After years of planning, Honda is transforming its Marysville Auto Plant into a hub for electric vehicle (EV) production. The company has invested in new technology and reconfigured the facility to accommodate the assembly of EV battery packs and vehicles. The reimagined production process highlights Honda's commitment to sustainability and its vision for a future dominated by electric mobility.

A Honda employee demonstrates the process of assembling the company's new EV battery packs in a newly renovated area inside the Marysville Auto Plant.

Leopold was responsible for introducing the changes for EV production at the Marysville plant, where Honda’s started its United States production with its first Accord in 1982. For example, an area previously used for vehicle painting has been transformed into a space where automated guided vehicles assist with battery assembly on the longest AGV line at Honda.

Honda has joined the plants in Marysville, Anna, and Jeffersonville with its retooled East Liberty Auto Plant to form the company’s EV HUB, which accounts for a total overall projected investment of $4.4 billion. “For us inside Honda, it’s a balance of man/machine concept. For the ‘see, touch, feel things’ that are really important for the human touch we’re utilizing that as our base process. For the things that have a complication from ‘I can’t visually do it,’ we’re going to automate that from a quality verification from a safety verification,” HDMA executive chief engineer Mike Fischer said.
