Honda is undertaking a significant manufacturing transformation, investing over $1 billion in its Ohio operations to become a global leader in electric vehicle (EV) production. This investment will see the installation of six massive 'giga presses,' a hallmark of Tesla's manufacturing, and a revolutionary 'cell' manufacturing system for EV battery cases. Typically, such pivotal changes would originate in Honda 's home country of Japan before being implemented in other facilities.
However, Honda is choosing to position its Ohio plants at the forefront of this global shift. This strategic decision signifies the importance of the US market for Honda's future EV strategy. The Marysville Auto Plant, a key player in this transformation, will be equipped to produce traditional vehicles, hybrids, and EVs on a single assembly line. Mike Fischer, North American lead for Honda's battery-electric vehicle projects, emphasized the significance of the Ohio EV hub, stating, 'This is establishing the global standard for EV production for people, for technology and for processes.'Honda's commitment to EV production extends beyond the Marysville plant. The company's engine complex in Anna, Ohio, will produce aluminum battery packs for new EVs. This facility, Honda's largest engine plant worldwide, has undergone remarkable expansion, growing from a modest building in 1985 to a sprawling 2.8-million-square-foot facility. Tim Stroh, EV battery case project leader, highlighted the broader implications of this technology, stating, 'We're establishing this large aluminum production technology for all Honda. The goal here is to roll that out to other products, other factors across the world.' To support this ambitious EV production, Honda is investing in six colossal, 6,000-ton high-pressure die cast machines. These 'megacasters,' or 'gigacasters' as Tesla calls them, will revolutionize the manufacturing process by casting entire battery packs in a single operation. This eliminates the need for welding multiple parts together, potentially slashing per-unit manufacturing costs. The cast battery packs will be transported from Anna to Marysville and other plants where Honda's joint venture battery cells with LG Energy Solution will be installed. To streamline this process, Honda is implementing a novel 'cell' manufacturing system at the Marysville plant. Instead of the traditional assembly line, where parts are added as a vehicle moves, the new system utilizes flexible manufacturing zones parallel to the main line. This design ensures that any potential disruptions in one zone won't affect the overall production flow. Bob Schwyn, senior vice president of Honda Development and Manufacturing of America, aptly described this transformation as 'a second founding for Honda,' emphasizing the company's commitment to reimagine its manufacturing approach. Honda remains steadfast in its goal of achieving zero environmental impact by 2050 through carbon neutrality, clean energy, and resource circulation, despite the slower-than-expected adoption of EVs in the US market
