The U.S. Department of Energy is providing $1.2 billion in funding to support renewable energy projects in Puerto Rico, aiming to strengthen the island's energy infrastructure after Hurricane Maria's impact.
The U.S. Department of Energy announced on Friday that it is allocating $1.2 billion in federal funds to support renewable energy projects in Puerto Rico . This investment aims to bolster the island's energy resilience following the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017. The funding package includes a $585 million loan guarantee to finance a 100-megawatt solar panel system across four cities: Ponce, Caguas, Coamo, and Peñuelas.
This system will also incorporate a 55-megawatt battery energy storage system. Additionally, the Department of Energy has extended two conditional loan guarantees totaling over $489 million for three battery energy storage systems in Arecibo and Santa Isabel. A further loan guarantee of over $133 million is earmarked for a 32-megawatt solar panel system in Yabucoa. These projects collectively will enable the storage of 455 megawatts of energy. While other cities, including San Juan, already have existing solar projects, this initiative represents a significant step towards achieving Puerto Rico's ambitious renewable energy goals. The island aims to generate 40% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025, 60% by 2040, and ultimately 100% by 2050
