Due to a higher homeless count in Columbus, advocates for those unhoused are calling for a change in law and policy to stop a trend they say is unsustainable.

The Community Shelter Board and its volunteers conducted its Point-In-Time count in January of this year. They say they counted 1,800 people at area shelters and 500 people living outside. They said the 2,300-person tally is up by 22% from the year before.MORE |Advocates now want leaders and lawmakers to change the way evictions are handled and protect current housing from investors wanting to increase rents while making few repairs.

"That means we are going to have rent control," said CSB President and CEO Shannon Isom. "That means we are going to carve out places in this community that we're going to have low, low, low, extremely low and moderate income."Isom told ABC6 On Your Side Problem Solvers that conversations regarding rent control are taking place with city leaders.
