Some car hire firms are adding unnecessary add ons to their car rentals, an investigation revealed
Holidaymakers have been warned that they could be subjected to scams when renting out a car abroad. A covert investigation from Which? revealed that some holiday car rental firms rip off customers through underhanded tactics to sell unnecessary insurance. The investigation focused on popular holiday spots in Spain and uncovered a variety of issues tourists face when hiring cars.
Connor Campbell, expert at Independent Advisor Car Insurance, said: “Like everything in travel, car rental rates vary dramatically depending on supply and demand; in the short run, supply is fixed, while demand is highly volatile. When you hire a car either in the UK or abroad, the car hire firm will usually include basic insurance, but this insurance will come with an excess. This is the amount that you, the policyholder, will need to pay towards any claim.
Excess insurance when hiring a car While car insurance can help you avoid massive bills in the event you need to make a claim on a hired car, the excess generally stands at £250 to £250. Despite this, some firms will try to sell unnecessary large excess insurance bundled with add-ons.
