The holiday season often brings overindulgence in food and alcohol, which can trigger atrial fibrillation (AFib) in some individuals. Cardiologist Keyur Mavani explains the symptoms, risks, and preventive measures for holiday heart syndrome.

We're in the midst of the holiday season and usually that means time for celebration. Celebrating too hard though can have its ill effects, especially with certain heart conditions. Tis' the season to be merry. While this is the most wonderful time of the year for many, the season also causes us to over-indulge. The over-indulgence can lead to irregular heartbeats, also known as atrial fibrillation (AFib). When your upper chamber goes into haywire it's called atrial fibrillation.

Usually it happens around the holiday times,' says Keyur Mavani, a cardiologist with WellSpan.'Holiday heart syndrome has multiple symptoms such as dizziness which is one of the most common because you are having binge drinking at the same time, dehydration,' says Keyur. 'You can feel palpitations and also heartbeat beating fast and also pounding heartbeat.''Based on the research, literature search, it's about 10 percent of the people who binge drink around the holidays or over the weekend can get atrial fibrillation,' says Keyur.'Usually this is self-resolved so within 24 hours, once you go to sleep, once you wake up, you're back to rhythm, symptoms go away,' says Keyur.'You should come to the emergency room, and in that case if your heart is fast or too slow, we will use medication,' says Keyur. 'If none of that helps then we shock your heart back to rhythm.' Holiday heart syndrome effect people of all ages... to young and old, meek and the bold. People with a history of heart disease are more at risk of complications.'Most of us will have the holiday stress, we'll have a lot of people coming and going. Plus we have a lot of dehydration, a lot of sweets, a lot of food. So the best thing to do is avoid the fatty food with a lot of salt in it. And at the same time, moderation in alcohol intake,' said Keyur. Stay hydrated. Make sure you drink plenty of water, especially when having that spiked eggnog. And stay active! Don't wait until the new year to start a workout routine
