Women who made claims for Child Benefit anytime between 1978 and 2000 are affected.
Thousands of parents could be owed £5,000 because of an HMRC error. The mix-up is said to potentially affect 210,000 people.
Some of the claimants didn't submit their National Insurance Number meaning their National Insurance credits were not transferred across properly. It has been said that mums could be owed an average of £5,000. Anyone who believes they might have been affected by the error is being told to check their state pension and National Insurance record.
For anyone who reached state pension age after April 5, 2010 any year of HRP/credits should be showing as a complete year on your NI record. If not, then you may have missed out. For those who reached pension age on or before April 5, 2010, HRP was recorded in a different way and you need to phone the NI helpline to check if there is HRP on your record, reports BirminghamLive.
In a statement about the mistake, a Government spokesperson said: “We have identified and are correcting an issue related to the historical recording of Home Responsibilities Protection on the National Insurance records for people who first claimed Child Benefit before May 2000. "Most people’s records will be unaffected, and we have launched a new online tool to help people check whether they need to claim. HMRC will also begin writing to those likely to be affected this Autumn." The spokesperson went on, saying: "Our priority is ensuring everyone receives the financial support to which they are entitled, and State Pension underpayment rates due to Official Error remain low at 0.5 per cent of expenditure.
