Almost a quarter of a million people could be affected by the HMRC mix-up
Women who made a claim for Child Benefit between 1978 and 2000 are affected after some claimants did not submit their National Insurance number. It means people could be getting less State Pension than they're owed, Birmingham Mail reports.
Mums affected could be owed an average of £5,000 each with 210,000 potentially set to receive the windfall. If you suspect you have missed out, you should first check your State Pension and your National Insurance record.READ MORE: Warning to E.on Next customers over winter discount eligibility For those who reached pension age after April 5, 2010, any year of HRP/credits should be showing as a complete year on your NI record. If not, then you may have missed out. For those who reached pension age on or before April 5, 2010, HRP was recorded in a different way and you need to phone the NI helpline to check if there is HRP on your record.
In a statement about the mistake, a Government spokesperson said: “We have identified and are correcting an issue related to the historical recording of Home Responsibilities Protection on the National Insurance records for people who first claimed Child Benefit before May 2000. "Most people’s records will be unaffected, and we have launched a new online tool to help people check whether they need to claim. HMRC will also begin writing to those likely to be affected this Autumn." The spokesperson went on, saying: "Our priority is ensuring everyone receives the financial support to which they are entitled, and State Pension underpayment rates due to Official Error remain low at 0.5% of expenditure.
