A historian believes he has finally identified the infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper, claiming it was Aaron Kosminski, a Polish immigrant who lived in London in the late 19th century. Edwards based his claim on DNA evidence found on a blood-soaked shawl and further research linking Kosminski to the Freemasons.

A historian claims to have finally identified the infamous serial killer known as Jack the Ripper. In an interview with 'Today' in Australia, historian Russell Edwards revealed his alleged identity – a name that has long been floated as the likely killer. Jack the Ripper was an infamous serial killer who terrorized the impoverished Whitechapel district of London in 1888, murdering five women in a nine-week period.

The victims – Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly – each met a horrific end, with their throats slit, post-mortem injuries inflicted, and body parts removed from some. The gruesome murders shocked the world and inspired countless theories, books, and films. The name 'Jack the Ripper' originated from a letter sent to the Central News Office in London, signed by that moniker, detailing the killings. Edwards, who has dedicated years to studying the case, authoring two books on Jack the Ripper, believes the killer was Aaron Kosminski, a Polish immigrant who settled in London as a barber. Kosminski, who was 23 at the time of the murders, had long been considered a prime suspect. He spent his final 28 years institutionalized due to schizophrenia and died in 1919. According to The Mirror, released police reports from 1894 revealed that investigators believed Kosminski was the culprit due to his 'great hatred of women, specially of the prostitute class, and had strong homicidal tendencies.' While police at the time concluded that all the victims were prostitutes, this has never been definitively proven. Nearly 120 years after the murders, Edwards claims to have purchased a blood-soaked shawl believed to have been left at one of the crime scenes. He initially had doubts but DNA tests on semen found on the shawl linked it to a relative of Kosminski’s sister. Edwards first named Kosminski as the killer in his 2014 book, but geneticists criticized the lack of technical details regarding the genetic sample analysis. However, the evidence was later strengthened by a DNA sample from Kosminski’s oldest brother’s great-great-granddaughter, according to Edwards. He also claims his research connects Kosminski to the highly secretive Freemasons, potentially providing a motive for the horrific crimes and possibly shielding him from law enforcement. Edwards and some descendants of the victims are now requesting an inquest from Britain’s High Court to officially name Kosminski as the killer. Karen Miller, the great-great-great-granddaughter of Eddowes, states that having the killer's name officially recorded would bring justice to the victims who were denied it in their time. 'It has all been about him, this iconic name, but people have forgotten about the victims who did not have justice at the time,' she told The Daily Mail. 'What about the real name of the person who did this? Having the real person legally named in a court which can consider all the evidence would be a form of justice for the victims. It would mean a lot to me, to my family, to a lot of people to finally have this crime solved.
