Coming on the heels of his beloved Oscar-winning film Sinners, Ryan Coogler is writing and directing a reboot of the iconic sci-fi fantasy series, The X-Files. With a pilot ordered by Hulu, Coogler has revealed that his X-Files reboot will honor the original series by featuring"both monsters of the week and the overarching conspiracy.

" As great as this sounds, there's still cause for concern given that Hulu recently canceled another reboot of a high-profile fantasy series from an Oscar-winning filmmaker. Earlier this month, the streaming platform controversially pulled the plug on a highly anticipated Buffy revival from Nomadland and Hamnet director Chloë Zhao. The pressure is definitely on for Coogler. However, the fact that he has reunited with Sinners casting director Francine Maisler for the X-Files reboot is an excellent sign, as is the addition of its newest cast member. The Addition Of Himesh Patel To The X-Files Reboot Is Very Exciting Yesterday, it was announced that Himesh Patel will be joining the X-Files reboot as the show's male lead. The British actor is best known for his role as the protagonist of Danny Boyle's Beatles-centric movie Yesterday, as well as Adam McKay's Don't Look Up and Christopher Nolan's Tenet. Excitingly, Patel will also reunite with Nolan in his upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey. On the TV side, Patel's most notable credit is in the cast of the criminally underrated Station Eleven, an HBO sci-fi miniseries centered on a traveling theatre troupe looking to bring joy back into the world after it has been ravaged by a global pandemic. Patel plays Jeevan Chaudhary, the protector of the young protagonist, Kirsten, and he earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for his performance. Patel's impressive filmography points to him being a perfect fit for The X-Files reboot, and his acting style should line up nicely with his new FBI agent character, assuming he is the Mulder-esque"believer" of the pair. The earnest everyman charm Patel imbues his characters with is also a welcome contrast to Duchovny's dry wit, ensuring that the new character won't be a carbon copy of his predecessor. Himesh Patel & Danielle Deadwyler Are Worthy Replacements For The Original Leads Himesh Patel isn't the only cast member in Ryan Coogler's The X-Files series, as award-winning actress Danielle Deadwyler will play the female lead. Deadwyler was in the Station Eleven cast, providing a reunion of sorts between her and Patel. Though they didn't have any scenes together in Station Eleven, the fact that Patel and Deadwyler were both drawn to the series proves they both know how to pick fantastic TV projects and that they can carry a sci-fi series. Furthermore, Deadwyler's natural chemistry with Steve Carell in the new HBO comedy series Rooster bodes well for her on-screen relationship with Patel, as his relatable hero qualities are similar to Carell's. Beyond Patel and Deadwyler both being decorated actors bursting with talent, the reboot has officially been given the seal of approval by Agent Scully herself. After reading the script, Gillian Anderson declared that Coogler's The X-Files would be"f**king cool." If that's not a good sign, nothing is. However, perhaps more importantly, it's Anderson's comments that the X-Files reboot was"different" and"special" that speak to its potential success. The worst thing a reboot or a revival can be is samey, and this would ultimately be an insult to Patel and Deadwyler's talents. Hopefully, under Coogler's direction, their performances will shine, and this newest iteration of The X-Files won't suffer the same fate as the Buffy revival. 124 9.1/10 8/10 The X-Files 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Mystery Crime Drama Science Fiction Release Date 1993 - 2018-00-00 Network FOX Showrunner Chris Carter Directors Rob Bowman, David Nutter, R.
