The girls’ softball team at James A. Garfield Senior High School in Los Angeles won their championship against all odds back in June.
Bernal, who's also a Garfield alumna herself, said she knew the team had talent and the potential to win. They just needed to put things into perspective and not get discouraged by their past record.
The Lady Bulldogs of James A. Garfield Senior High School in Los Angeles won the CIF Los Angeles City Section Division II softball championship in June.The Lady Bulldogs had a lot of challenges to overcome during their season, which ran from January to June. They had player injuries and morale issues to work through and then their big disadvantage was that they had no home field to play on as their field was under reconstruction.
Arnie Carrillo with his daughters Aimee and Nadia Carrillo, who were both part of Garfield Senior High School's championship-winning girls' softball team.Despite it all, the Lady Bulldogs kept practicing and squeezed in field time at nearby East Los Angeles College, which loaned their softball field to the teen players.

"I think they just started believing in their capability and their preparation and they just took off and represented our school really well.
