Daniel Sunjata as detective karadac in high potential with elementary in a bubble
From 2012 to 2019, Elementary was the most watchable police procedural on TV, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu as modern-day equivalents to Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. Now, Kaitlin Olson's High Potential has finally given that series a worthy successor.
High Potential Finally Gives Elementary a Worthy Successor Based on a popular Belgian show, High Potential follows Morgan Gillory - a "high potential" intellectual who is capable of incredible situational awareness and feats of memory. After Gillory's abilities come to light, she's hired by LAPD's Major Crimes Division, partnering with Daniel Sunjata's by-the-book Detective Adam Karadec to solve a series of deadly crimes. Elementary and High Potential have a lot of similarities - a genius but anarchic main character solves a case of the week while investigating the disappearance of a loved one as part of a longer arc. Likewise, the emerging friendship between the two stars is part of what makes each show charming and moreish. Both mix logical 'follow at home' deduction with a wry sense of humor, with High Potential adding whimsical cutaways to illustrate Morgan's creative thought process. Elementary More Than Deserves a Worthy Successor Despite ending in 2019, Elementary hasn't had many worthy successors in the seven years since. Police procedurals aren't exactly rare, but Elementary had a quirky sense of humor and a deep sense of empathy for its characters that have been sorely missed. Sherlock's sobriety and loneliness were big themes in Elementary, and High Potential replicates that human touch, as Olson's detective works to co-parent two very different kids with her former partner Ludo - SNL's Taran Killam. At the same time, she's secretly investigating the disappearance of her daughter's father, with the aid of Lieutenant Selena Soto - Scrubs' Judy Reyes. Likewise, Elementary was skilled at balancing a satisfying mystery of the week with longform storytelling, and was celebrated for playing fair with viewers, presenting them with the same clues as Miller's Sherlock so they could solve the crime for themselves. If anything, High Potential goes further, with the camera lingering on and highlighting the details that build towards Gillory's conclusion. Where to Watch High Potential American fans can currently watch new episodes of High Potential on the ABC Network, streaming on Hulu and Disney+. Disney+ is the place to head for most international fans, with CTV and Crave currently streaming the show in Canada.
