Researchers found that animal subjects that consumed large amounts of food with high-fructose corn syrup were susceptible to accelerated tumor growth in certain types of cancer.

A recent study has found further evidence that consuming high quantities of high-fructose corn syrup could potentially speed up the growth of some tumors in certain types of cancer. Researchers from Washington University in St. Louis found that in some cases, the growth rate of tumors in their animal subjects accelerated two-fold or higher when feeding them a diet that was high in fructose. "When we think about tumors, we tend to focus on what dietary components they consume directly.

And if the body is consuming high amounts of fructose, allowing the liver to convert that into more lipids, cancer cells can thrive more easily. The accelerated tumor growth was evidenced for certain types of cancer in the animal subjects that were a part of this study. These included melanoma, breast cancer and cervical cancer. "Over the past few years, it’s become clear that many cancer cells prefer to take up lipids rather than make them," Patti noted.
