Police have said they believe the double-decker bus blaze may have been started deliberately.

A heroic bus driver ran back to her Stagecoach vehicle after it burst into flames to check there were no passengers on board. Emergency services were scrambled to the scene at Lime Street Station in Liverpool last night after reports of a blaze aboard a double-decker.

A man was working on the till in a nearby corner shop when he spotted a fire had started at the back seats on the top deck of the bus. He said: "I saw people all running away and running off and around the bus. The flames slowly came forwards on the top deck and there was smoke everywhere. Another man who works nearby said: "The smoke just took over the road and it absolutely stunk. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I felt so bad for the bus driver.

The force has confirmed that, after further reports and examinations, the fire may have been caused deliberately. A spokesperson said: "At around 6.30pm officers were called to a report of a fire on a bus on Lime Street. Top news stories today A spokesperson from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "One team of two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were committed under rapid deployment with two hose reel jets to prevent escalation.
