Read below to unpack that wild and unexpected ending. What Happens In the 'Paradise' Season 2 Finale? The eighth episode titled “Exodus” begins nine years earlier at Caltech with Link , also known as Dylan, showing professor Henry Miller his new invention that can “predict anything that can go wrong in the future in microseconds.” “This is the first AI-controlled quantum computer that’s ever been built,” Dylan tells Henry, who teaches advanced wave functions, superposition and quantum entanglement. This is how their relationship begins. In Episode 7, Link arrives at the bunker and meets Sinatra face-to-face. During their meeting, he asks where Alex is but she won't budge. When it’s time to go, one of Link’s crew members calls him “Dylan,” which elicits a reaction from Sinatra. She asks him his date of birth; May 16, he says. But more on the significance of that later. At the end of the seventh episode, Sinatra says, “Hi, Alex” to someone ... or is it something? This is where things start to get connected and intertwined. Who Is Alex in 'Paradise'? Alex is Henry's wife and is suffering from Huntington’s disease, which causes nerve cells in the brain to decay over time. As the episode continues, it turns out that Alex is both a human and a machine. In flashback scenes, Henry meets with Sinatra and her science advisor, Dr. Chase, to help her create “the fastest computer possible” with the mission to solve the climate crisis before it becomes a catastrophe. “Alex will perform,” Henry says, sharing that he named the AI system after his wife. Turns out Henry and Dylan did create the fastest computer ever ... and it scared them. At one point, Henry tells Sinatra that he needs to shut down the machine because it was starting to get dangerous and “trying to manipulate time.” It also started to predict the future. But first, back to why Sinatra was shocked to learn that Link's name is really Dylan. The Complicated Relationship Between Dylan and Sinatra Viewers recall that Sinatra hired now-deceased Agent Billy to kill Henry. Dylan came face-to-face with Billy when he walked into Henry and Alex’s house and found them dead. Because of their work on the computer, Dylan knew who Sinatra was and all about the plans for the underground bunker. It’s assumed that Sinatra killed Henry so that she could keep AI “Alex” and not destroy it. This is also why Dylan wants to know where “Alex” is. Sinatra discovering that Link's real name is Dylan is important because that is the name of her son who died. His May 16 birthdate is also significant because it is when her late son was born. In the finale, Sinatra says that Dylan is her son — or at least believes it. When she’s in front of “Alex,” she tells Dr. Chase that she thinks she saw one of the computer’s “anomalies.” “My son, Dylan,” she says, to which he replies, “That’s unlikely.” She says she “can’t explain it” and knows that it doesn’t make sense, but she is certain Dylan is her son. 'Alex' Makes a Major Prediction That Changes the Course of Many Lives Dr. Chase then tells Sinatra that “Alex” has started to communicate and make predictions. “And what she’s predicted has come true,” he says, adding that she predicted that Sinatra would arrive there today. He hands her a message created by “Alex,” which includes dates, possible coordinates and a “user” who is meant to “activate it.” But there is also another message “Alex” has communicated: Sinatra will be dead by the end of the day. Xavier and Teri Return to the Bunker, Chaos Ensues Xavier and Teri are seen on the train making their way back to the bunker. Both asleep, Xavier appears to have a dream in which Dylan walks in front of him and tells him “we have to move fast.” However, he’s never met Dylan. He only has the photo ID that Annie had given him after she died giving birth to her and Dylan’s baby. Inside Paradise, oxygen failure is happening but the doors are in full lockdown mode to keep Dylan and the people on the outside from coming into the bunker. An explosion in the systems level kills Anders , the architect of the bunker, and injures Agent Robinson . The only option now is to implement “Exodus,” the evacuation protocol. When Sinatra returns to the tower, or control center, she tells Dr. Torabi and everyone else to go help people evacuate and that she “would take it from here.” In a call with Dr. Chase, Sinatra tells him the reactors are melting, to close the tram tunnel and “put ‘Alex’ on an island ... ‘Alex’ needs to be protected at all costs.” Xavier and Teri go in search of their kids, but Presley is still stuck in an elevator near the reactors with Sinatra's daughter Hadley . Xavier goes to the tower to search for them on the security cameras and finds Sinatra, who helps him locate the girls. The two attempt to save their daughters and they are able to with the help of Dylan and his crew, who also made it inside the bunker. Dylan, with his knowledge of “Alex” and technology, tries to stop the meltdown from happening. In the process, his member Geiger dies. They successfully save injured Agent Robinson, who had told the late President Cal Bradford’s son, Jeremy , to leave her behind and save himself. As they're exiting the lower levels, Xavier experiences déjà vu, remembering his dream that included Dylan. Dylan stops, points his gun at Sinatra and once again asks, “Where is Alex?” She tells him that “Alex” is already working and adds, “You’re my son. It’s complicated but you are.” Ready to shoot Sinatra, Dylan also experiences some sort of flashback where he sees the same memory that Xavier did. “What is this?!” he yells, with Xavier saying that he doesn’t know either. “But I know Annie. I met her in Graceland.” He tells Dylan that Annie died giving birth to their baby and that he can take him to her. Sinatra Makes the Ultimate Sacrifice Dylan says that when Paradise explodes it will spray radiation out the doors “like a cannon.” The doors were built to withstand a nuclear blast from the outside, which means they should be able to contain one from the inside, Sinatra says. The only issue is that to close the doors, someone needs to be inside the tower, inside Paradise. Sinatra tells the group to take her to the tower. When her daughter asks where she’s going, Sinatra replies, “To make things right.” “Alex” had predicted that Sinatra would be dead by the end of the day. Viewers recall that the message stated that it would need a 'user' to activate her death. It so happens that the message reads: “Awaiting user: X.” Sinatra realizes that she will die when Dylan calls Xavier “X.” In the tower, Sinatra tells Xavier that she will “go down with the ship,” ultimately sacrificing herself to save the others. She also hands him something. As Paradise collapses, Sinatra goes out to the town square. She is greeted by her late son Dylan, who holds her hand and the two are seen walking down the street. If this is real or an illusion, it’s unclear. Where Is Xavier Going Next? The mountain explodes, but where is Xavier? Thankfully, he’s seen returning to the basecamp where everyone was evacuated and reuniting with his family. Dylan is also seen holding his baby girl and asks Xavier what her name is. He decides to name her Annie. A flashback shows that Sinatra, before she closed the doors, gave Xavier message that 'Alex' predicted. She tells him that he is user X and that there is a second bunker that is deep underneath the Denver airport. In it, he will find Alex, the quantum computer that “can stop all of this. In fact, it already has stopped all of this.” She tells him he needs to get there, follow the instructions and “go save the world.” When Xavier asks what makes her think he will do what she says, she replies, “I believe you already have.” The episode ends with a view at the second underground bunker where “Alex” is housed and Xavier looking out into the distance.
