Top health officials are bracing Americans for quite possibly the worst stretch of the coronavirus pandemic this week, with case numbers and death counts expected to peak in cities and states all across the country, as the nation with the most number of people infected in the world struggles to handle a deadly outbreak spanning coast to coast. to prepare for the several week period when the number of infected would swell, thousands would die, and hospitals would be pushed to a breaking point.
All indications point to the U.S. entering that period this week, with models predicting some of the nation’s most populous cities, such as New York, New Orleans and Detroit, reaching their apex in case numbers in the coming days. “This is going to be the hardest and saddest week of most Americans’ lives, quite frankly,” U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adamson Fox News Sunday. “This is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment, our 9/11 moment, only it’s not going to be localized. It’s going to be happening all over the country."
There are signs that the social distancing measures put in place by state and local lawmakers across the country are working, but it will take time for these directives to have a substantial impact in bringing down the number of new cases.
