Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Herb Alpert had his first hit 61 years ago and has been making music even longer than that. He co-founded the powerful A&M Records label with the late Jerry Moss and has won Grammy and Tony Awards along with a National Medal of the Arts. At 88 he's still going strong, with a new album this month and a show at Playhouse Square with wife Lani Hall.
Dude is 88, and has been writing songs since the late 1950s and putting out records of his own since 1960. He began his own hit parade with “The Lonely Bull” in 1962 and also formed a recording company, A&M Records, with the recently deceased Jerry Moss. He’s sold more than 74 million records worldwide with his Tijuana Brass and on his own, has won eight Grammy Awards and a Tony, was inductedand received a National Medal of the Arts in 2013.
Alpert: Yeah, he was an especially nice person. He was a good guy. It didn’t come as a total shock ‘cause he’d been ill for a couple of years now, kinda slowly sinking -- although it was a shock when he passed. I was somewhat prepared but not really prepared for his passing.Alpert: He was more on the business end than I was. There was an integrity about him that I liked a lot. There was honesty about him, and it was easy to be with him. He listened. He was flexible. He was just honorable.
You include a version of the Carpenters’ “We’ve Only Just Begun” on the new album, which seems appropriate given your history with the group.
