James Gunn goes into more detail about Henry Cavill not returning as Superman in the new DC Universe: 'Henry Cavill was not fired. Henry was just not hired to be Superman in the Superman movie. There was never a deal there for another movie.'
James Gunn responds to accusations that Henry Cavill was fired from his gig as Superman. Last year was a controversial year for DC as Warner Bros. Discovery worked on course correcting for the previous few years. The cancellation of HBO Max's Batgirl movie, despite having finished filming, took Hollywood by storm. Then there was the return of Cavill as Superman for a cameo in Black Adam. The plan from the studio was to get Cavill ready for Man of Steel 2, which was in early development.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The news was received with heavily mixed reactions online, and Gunn has since been dealing with the fallout of Cavill's Superman exit. Many are convinced the British star was fired by Gunn, but that isn't the case. Screen Rant joined other press for a special DC Studios event where Gunn revealed some of the upcoming DCU slate. One of the topics brought up was the Cavill situation. Gunn stressed that neither Cavill nor Ben Affleck are part of the new DCU.
All I can tell you right now, really, is Henry and Ben are not a part of this universe. Also important to say that Henry Cavill was not fired. Henry was just not hired to be Superman in the Superman movie. There was never a deal there for another movie.Everything New Revealed About James Gunn's Superman Reboot At the same press event, it was confirmed the new Superman reboot will launch the DCU.
For DC Studios, the story of the scripts comes first before they even start the casting process for any DCU movie. Given that Superman: Legacy is scheduled for Summer 2025, production is likely not going to start until late 2023 or sometime in 2024. There is also the notion that many Hollywood blockbusters go through several drafts before a script is finalized.
While Cavill may no longer be donning the iconic red-and-blue suit, there is always the chance he will join the DCU in a new capacity. Even though it wasn't directly addressed this week, Gunn could always look at a different character for Cavill in the upcoming universe. Time will tell if Cavill will ever return to the superhero genre, as he is currently developing a Warhammer TV show for Amazon.
