Henry Cavill's plans for a Warhammer 40k TV show are exciting, but could also present the actor with similar problems he faced with The Witcher. Henry Cavill's experience with The Witcher is a strange tale, in that the lead of the popular, though bumpy, video game adaptation was suddenly recast after season 3.
Even while Cavill was starring in the show, The Witcher had its problems. Adapting a video game for television is not an easy task, even if we are in something of a golden age for video game adaptations. Despite his issues with The Witcher, Cavill has plans to adapt something even more tricky: Warhammer 40k. Henry Cavill Is Working On A Warhammer 40k Adaptation A long-time fan of the Warhammer 40k tabletop RPG, Henry Cavill announced plans to make a Warhammer 40k TV show back in 2022. He obtained the IP and brought it to Amazon Studios, who were interested. However, on May 30, 2025, Cavill gave an update that was less than promising. Cavill said about the process,"It is a tricky IP, and a very complex IP, and that's what I love about it." He was sure to stress that he was enjoying the work of adapting the material, but as one of the producers on the show, he's beginning to come face-to-face with problems with the IP. Warhammer 40k Will Be Difficult To Adapt To Television The Warhammer 40k universe could arguably be one of the most difficult IPs to adapt ever. That"40k" of the title refers to the year 40,000, in Earth years. That's the millennia in which the game is primarily set. However, one of the most important plot points of the universe, the"Horus Heresy", takes place in the 30,000 Millennium. If Cavil wants to bridge the"meat" of the universe with the storyline that is responsible for everything, he'll need to connect 10,000 years of time. Even more problematic, Warhammer 40k, by its very nature, has no protagonists. The unofficial tagline of the games is,"In the grim dark of the 41st Millennium, there is only war." That's not just a cool saying; it's vital to the universe and the tabletop game. There are about a dozen armies in the games, and Games Workshop, who makes them, has to ensure that every army is enticing. If you start making one more interesting than the other, that's not great for sales. A Warhammer 40k Adaptation Will Face Similar Problems As The Witcher One of the biggest issues people have with The Witcher is that the series is not accurate to the story found in the books or in the games. When fans are watching an adaptation, they want it to adapt the things they know and love. Adapting Warhammer 40k accurately will be even more difficult. It's almost imperative that Cavill and his crew make their own story set in the 40k universe, because if they attempt to utilize existing characters and lore, they are going to run into the inevitable problem of Warhammer 40k, which is that the story is specifically designed not to end.
