San Antonio Police Chief William McManus and San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood attended Perez’s rosary and funeral. Hood shared with the bereaved that he had a picture of Perez on his office wall. He recalled how Perez phoned him on Christmas Eve and they talked for more than an hour. Perez, he said, was “a bright light for everyone who knew him.”
“I believe we all have a time to go,” Nettles said. “God let me borrow him for almost 38 years. Then I had to give him back.” Nettles said proceeds will help families with high costs of hospitalizations, medications, medical supplies and home modifications. Rosanne Gonzales, executive director at Spina Bifida Texas, said the nonprofit serves South and Central Texas with the Lending Closet, which has donated resources, medical supplies and adaptive equipment for families in need.
