However, as NBC10 First Alert meteorologist Marvin Gomez reports, showers and a rumble of thunder may roll in overnight Sunday into Monday, with the potential for severe storms by Monday afternoon. Severe storms threaten the Philadelphia region on Monday, with the potential for heavy rain, damaging winds, and tornadoes.Heavy snow across the Rocky Mountains on Saturday is part of what will turn into a powerful winter storm later this weekend. Widespread snow will unfold across the northern plains and the upper Midwest Saturday and into Sunday. On the warm side of the storm, plenty of moisture will lift north from the Gulf on the eastern side of the Mississippi River. As the storm moves east, it will drag a cold front. Severe storms with tornadoes and damaging winds will affect several states on Sunday. The East Coast from New York to Florida is at risk of severe storms on Monday.The Philadelphia region will be on the warmer side of the storm, with plenty of moisture setting the stage for periods of heavy rain midday in most areas. More storms, strong to potentially severe, are expected during the afternoon, and some of these could gain some rotation. The risk for tornadoes with this setup might be slightly greater than our most recent severe weather risk this past week. The NBC10 First Alert Weather team believes tornado warnings are more likely this time around. After widespread storms during the day, a more linear storm structure with damaging winds as the main threat will approach from the west during the evening. This line comes ahead of the blast of cold air. Within this fierce line, rotation may take place as well. By midnight, the severe weather will likely be over, and some weather models are even indicating that some of the final precipitation could be in the form of snow. If this verifies, it would be nothing more than snowflakes like we had this past week with our most recent blast of cold air.
