Western Sydney is experiencing a heatwave, leading to potential power outages across the region. Major cities like Penrith, Richmond, Parramatta, Campbelltown, and Liverpool are forecast to face high temperatures, putting pressure on the energy grid. The Australian Energy Market Operator has issued a high-risk warning for blackouts in New South Wales, urging residents to conserve energy.
Western Sydney residents have been warned of possible blackouts as a heatwave sweeps across large swathes of the state. Penrith and Richmond are expecting 39C on Tuesday, while Parramatta is predicted to reach 35C, and Campbelltown and Liverpool in the city’s southwest are on track for 36C highs. The following day, Penrith and Richmond are forecast for a 40C high, with Parramatta set for 38C, Liverpool 38C and Campbelltown 39C.
The heatwave comes at a time when three of the state’s four coal-fired power stations were still offline after spring maintenance, raising fears of power outages. The Australian Energy Market Operator has issued a “lack of reserve” notice for NSW from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm, indicating the second-highest risk level for blackouts. Residents are advised not to leave lights on unnecessarily or run air-conditioners at very low temperatures. With temperatures in Sydney expected to be milder, at 31C on Tuesday and 33C on Wednesday, the city centre is less affected
