The queer hockey series, based on the Game Changers novels by author Rachel Reid, became an overnight sensation when it premiered on Crave and HBO Max in November 2025. Heated Rivalry follows the years-long relationship between rivals-turned-lovers Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov , star hockey payers for Montreal and Boston, respectively. Their secret relationship developed over the course of the six-episode first season, starting as a friends-with-benefits situation before turning into a full-blown love affair. In an interview with Pink News, the creator-writer-director discussed what he's most excited about adapting in the sophomore outing, which will be based on The Long Game, Reid's second Hollander-Rozanov-focused novel. Rather, Tierney is excited to write the relationship between Hayden Pike and Ilya. I don’t have my full plan worked out yet. When Shane and Ilya get married, like by Hayden’s kids, it’s like the cutest thing I’ve ever seen where of course I’m going to do that. So there’s a thing I can commit to. I just don’t want to commit to… I want to wheel out a little room to maneuver. But that for sure will enter in. I mean, truly, the thing I’m looking forward to so much is writing Ilya and Hayden in season two because of how funny they are together and that endless antagonism that I think will be very, very charming. Hayden Pike is Shane's best friend and fellow Montreal player. Though he is supportive of Shane's relationship, he has a harder time looking past the Ilya Rozanov he knows from the rink to see who the Russian is in Shane's eyes. Though this never escalates into full-blown conflict, Reid uses this antagonism for comedic relief in her novels and Tierney seems eager to do the same. Ilya's plan to move to Ottawa to be closer to Shane will also put him in proximity to Hayden Pike and his family, which will lead to a close if contentious relationship between the pair, though one that is underscored by love, especially that between Ilya and Hayden's four young children. It's unclear how deep the series will dive into this as Tierney is still in the writing stage for season 2, but the writer at least confirms the presence of one beloved scene. Filming is expected to begin this summer, with Heated Rivalry season 2 slated for release some time in the spring. Details are otherwise scarce for the new episodes, though Tierney has also teased the introduction of new characters, including Troy Barrett, a new teammate of Ilya's, who also got his own Game Changers book, Role Model. How much of The Long Game Tierney will adapt, though, remains an open question. It's a long book, tracking a pivotal period in Shane and Ilya's relationship, and it could easily be split in half. However, Reid is also working on a third novel for Shane and Ilya, titled Unrivaled and currently slated for release in 2027. Needless to say, though, the second season of Heated Rivalry is already one of 2027's most anticipated television events. Williams and Storrie's profiles skyrocketed overnight thanks to the series and, since its bow, they have been near inescapable, popping up at awards season events, fashion week parties, and on the cover of plenty of magazines. The pair have also filmed a few projects between seasons, with Storrie set to appear in A24 and Molly Gordon's Peaked, while Williams will star in Crave miniseries Yaga, based on the play by Kat Sandler. Speaking to the stars' popularity, copies of the play were sold out immediately after Williams' casting was announced.
