In 2026, there have been five known traffic crashes that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist in North Texas.

Dallas Fort-Worth drivers encounter many different obstacles when hitting the road — including each other. Motorcycle riders continue to be highly represented in fatal traffic crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

NHTSA data shows there were 6,335 motorcyclists killed in 2023 — 15% of all traffic fatalities. On average, one motorcyclist dies in a crash on Texas roads every day, according to the Texas Department of Transportation data.Pay special attention when making turns or driving through an intersection. It’s safest to let motorcycles pass when making a turn to avoid turning in front of the rider. Train yourself to notice motorcycles. They’re smaller and lower to the ground, which makes them harder to spot.Keep a safe distance. Motorcycles can slow down by downshifting, which doesn’t activate brake lights.Advertisement Here’s a few things to keep in mind about safely riding a motorcycle from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Wear a quality helmet, eye protection, a jacket and pants, gloves and sturdy shoes that cover your ankles. A full-face helmet provides the best protection. Bright clothing, a light-colored helmet and reflective strips or decals on your clothing and on your motorcycle increase the chances of being seen. According to NHTSA, it’s important to make sure you have the correct licensing. Though requirements vary, all states require a motorcycle license endorsement to supplement your vehicle driver’s license.Give other motorists time and space to respond to you. Search for vehicles that may turn across your path, especially at intersections.
