Defensive end among 3 Crimson Tide players in Mobile this week

The 6-foot-2, 278-pound Overton is one of three Crimson Tide players in Mobile this week, along with fellow defensive lineman Tim Keenan and tight end Josh Cuevas. He said he’s not overlooking the good fortune he has to be among so many of the best players in the country.

“I’m blessed,” Overton said. “I’ve been working all my life just to have opportunities like this, to play against top level guys in any conference, just all in one area. It’s given me an opportunity to showcase my talent, any position and from any sort of defensive scheme that’s played throughout the NFL. I’m excited for the opportunity.” Overton said he had to rely on his faith heavily during the 2025 season, when he missed two late-season games with a still-undisclosed medical issue. Overton sat out the SEC championship game vs. Georgia and the College Football Playoff opener at Oklahoma before returning to the field in the season-ending loss to Indiana in the Rose Bowl.Overton got a clean bill of health prior to the Rose Bowl, in which he finished with seven tackles in a 38-3 loss. He said earlier this week he’s feeling good and ready to show his stuff in Mobile. “Anything like that can happen to anybody in the world,” Overton said. “And it just happened to me at probably the worst moment. But it gave me a lot of life lessons through that time, especially building up on the leadership aspect. So I’m high on God, so I believe everything happens for a reason. So it wasn’t too much I can complain about. I’m in a good situation right now.” The one-on-one battles between the offensive and defensive linemen are among the highlights of Senior Bowl week, the best way for the big guys in the trenches to show what they can do. Overton was part of aat the end of Monday’s practice, in which he drove Wright back several yards before the offensive lineman pushed him to the ground. Overton said he relishes those mano-y-mano battles, where there are no double-teams or stunts. He said he’s ready to show his stuff in front of the dozens of NFL scouts and talent-evaluators at the Senior Bowl. “Honestly, just my skill level on a one-on-one base,” Overton said. “I feel like throughout the seasons I was double-, triple-teamed a lot and that’s what comes with tight end chips, running back chips. That’s what the game comes with. But it’s helped me showcase my one-on-one talent and you know what I could do individually as a player instead of having stick to a scheme. This week’s about individualizing ourselves, showing what we can do.” Overton, who was born in Texas but spent most of his childhood in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham before finishing high school in Georgia . He played his first two seasons of college football at Texas A&M before transferring to Alabama ahead of the 2024 season. In four years of college football, Overton totaled 123 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and seven sacks. Despite missing the two late-season games, he set career-highs in all three categories in 2025 — 42 tackles, six TFLs, four sacks. Overton said he feels good about where he and his teammates left the Alabama program. The Crimson Tide returned to the College Football Playoff in 2025, bouncing back from a humbling loss to Florida State in the season-opener to finish with 11 victories. “I feel like we had a lot of battles throughout the season,” Overton said. “We probably had one of the toughest schedules throughout the whole country this season. And starting out with that first loss versus FSU, you would think that a lot of guys would just fall back, but we just kept our head strong the whole time. We just had that 1-0 mentality. And me, , the whole leadership group, we just kept pushing our guys throughout the whole year. “And that’s something you love to see because now you’ve got younger guys picking up after what we were telling them. That just carries on. So that’s something you want to see once you go back to that area.” The 2026 Panini Senior Bowl kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Central on Saturday at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile. The game will air live via NFL Network.Creg Stephenson is a sports writer for AL.com, with a primary focus on in-state college sports.
