In high school football action, Headland scored late to defeat Ashford while Carroll secured its first win under new head coach Matt Mellown.
COMBIINED STAFF REPORTS HEADLAND – A Kam Sconiers 1-yard touchdown run with 44 seconds left in the game erased a 1-point deficit and pushed Headland to a 21-14 win over Ashford Friday.
Ashford took its first lead of the game on a 25-yard run by Jay Ragland with 9:34 left in the game. Paramore’s two-point conversion made it 14-13. Carroll 24, Pike County 17: The Eagles played at home for the first time this season on the recently installed artificial turf and Matt Mellown recorded his first win as a head coach on Friday night.
Pawlik connected with Roberts again, this time on a 60-yard TD pass and catch, with 11:56 left in the game and Recor added the PAT to make it 24-10.Carroll’s Tereon Wilson intercepted a pass in the end zone with 1:36 remaining and Carroll ran out the clock to get the victory.Dale County 28, Ariton 12: Dallas Hedstrom connected with Junior Smith for touchdown passes of 59 and 66 yards in the second quarter to give the Warriors momentum at halftime on the way to the road victory.
For Ariton, Jayden Caple scored on a touchdown run and Brody Joyce caught a touchdown pass from Addison Senn. Slocomb 10, Geneva 0: Hayes Hatton rushed for 132 yards on 19 carries in helping the RedTops to the victory. Kinston finished with 515 total yards, including 451 rushing. Three Bulldogs finished with 100 yards rushing – Gabriel Hataway with 165 yards on 12 carries, Colby Tew with 133 on 22 carries and Brant McCollough with 100 on eight carries. Hataway rushed for three touchdowns, Tew for two and McCollough for one.
Ray finished with 323 yards passing and three touchdowns, also throwing for a 12-yarder to Tyler Lamb and a 42-yarder to J.T. Yarbrough. Hornsby had 166 yards in receptions and also rushed for 92 yards and a two-point conversion. Colton Shelton and Lamb both had 52 yards in receptions.
