Tobias Santelmann's Harry looking shocked while leaning back in his chair in Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole
As he gears up for his second on-screen adaptation, Harry Hole is also looking to return to the page with a new novel on the way. Created by Jo Nesbø, the Norwegian detective has thus far been the protagonist of 13 books, beginning with 1996's Flaggermusmannen .
As with many iconic literary detectives, Hole is an obsessive, brilliant investigator who is often off-putting to his colleagues and utilizes unorthodox methods in his investigations. The novels, whose most recent installment was 2023's Blodmåne , have also followed his struggles with alcoholism and depression, and chronicled his efforts to improve both his mental health and his actions while on duty. Now, in honor of the premiere of the Netflix series adaptation, ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns interviewed Jo Nesbø to discuss Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole. When asked about a potential fourteenth book in his novel franchise, the author confirmed that"I've been working on a new Harry Hole novel" while in the shooting and post-production process of the nine-episode Netflix show, and confirmed it is slated for a Fall 2026 release. He also offered the first plot details, in which the"backdrop of the story is a film production," humorously calling it"no surprise" as it came during the show's production. Nesbø's confirmation that a new Harry Hole novel is on the way comes at the perfect time as the franchise is getting its second-ever screen adaptation with the Netflix series. The character was previously brought to life on screen with the Michael Fassbender-led Snowman in 2017, adapting the 2007 novel of the same name. Despite the hopes of launching an ongoing franchise, however, its critical and commercial failure scrapped any such plans, with the movie's director having disowned the film since. Unlike the 2017 film, Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole will take a similar to adapting his novels as Michael Connelly has done with his Bosch universe, combining multiple novels for its story. The Netflix series is largely adapting the fifth novel in the source franchise, Marekors , in which the eponymous detective, now played by Hercules alum Tobias Santelmann, investigates a serial killer in Oslo who is leaving tiny diamonds in the shape of a pentagram at each crime scene. However, it will also feature elements from the previous two novels, Rødstrupe and Sorgenfri . All three stories heavily saw Hole contending with his archenemy, the corrupt police officer Tom Waaler, who is played in the Netflix series by DC Universe vet Joel Kinnaman. The decision to set the next Harry Hole novel within a film production makes sense for a few reasons. Beyond the obvious of Nesbø being in the midst of one with the Netflix show's production, the previous novel, Killing Moon, saw the character living in Los Angeles, the well-known home of much of the film and TV industries. However, what will be interesting to see is whether Nesbø gives his character a rare case outside of Norway, as all but the first two installments had their investigations set in the country, particularly Oslo. Beyond the confirmation of the next book's arrival in fall, a new Harry Hole book should be an encouraging sign for the show's potential future. In giving the iconic detective new stories, Nesbø can build out future avenues for the Netflix series to explore, much in the way Connelly did with his Bosch shows.
