Harlandale boys basketball's Justus Benken is a German exchange student living in San Antonio
On the first day of school, Eric De Los Santos ’ phone was blowing up with new messages. “Have you seen this six-foot-seven German kid?,” said the Harlandale boys basketball coach, recalling those texts. De Los Santos didn’t take too much stock in those messages, at least not until girls basketball coach Wendell Mulkey brought Justus Benken to him in person. Now, De Los Santos describes Benken as a “blessing,” an unexpected asset from the other side of the world.
“We ask him to share so that we’re also learning something about his culture as well,” De Los Santos said. “He’s learning everyday about ours, so we want to learn about his as well.” Getting acclimated at school was not a huge problem for Benken, who’s been taking English classes since he was in third grade. “He has done a great job and our kids have done a great job with acclimating him into our culture into our program,” De Los Santos said. “It really hasn’t been an issue.
