Public feedback produced an alternative list of doomed schools but the decision, if it comes, will be painful either way, officials have said.
The Harlandale Independent School District board might vote late Monday to close up to four underutilized schools to stave off a financial crisis in the coming fiscal year.Public feedback on a proposal aired this month produced a second option with a different lineup of schools but the decision, if it happens, will be painful either way, officials have said.
“We have a problem. It’s a decline of enrollment,” he said. “Our solution is to keep our buildings open.” Option A would move the district's central office to Morrill Elementary, which has historical value as the first school in Harlandale. It would expand the Harlandale Care Center to the central office's current location. Option B would move the Harlandale Care Center to Morrill Elementary instead of the central office.
Some parents noted that IDEA South Flores, a charter school that competes with the district for students, has been handing out flyers in the parking lots of schools that might close. Soto said expanding district programs and offerings at those campuses could help Harlandale keep students and recruit new ones.
