Hanging Judge | No such thing as a friendly

I have refereed quite a few unfriendly games. The whole thing about, and surrounding, friendlies boggles my mind.

Another important issue from a refereeing point of view is to insist on getting a team sheet from the participating clubs, with the correct names and numbers of each player. His team ended up with eight players on the field – yes, they were shown three red cards. So much for a friendly! Mourinho’s red card came after he entered the field to remonstrate with the referee over a disputed goal that saw the Spanish side go 3-2 up after 57 minutes. It was alleged that Real Betis player Alex Moreno had handled the ball over the line to give the home side the lead.

What followed was nothing short of disgraceful, with the Roma players and their manager engaging in shocking, distasteful and very poor sportsmanlike behaviour.
