A tragic accident claimed the life of a Hamlin Central School District student, prompting an outpouring of grief and support from the school community.

Emergency vehicles lined Roosevelt Highway in Hamlin Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025, following a fatal crash. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office reported a single-vehicle accident around 3:15 p.m. when a 16-year-old boy, identified as Josh Peters, lost control of his eastbound vehicle, veering off the road and colliding with a utility pole. Peters was pronounced dead at the scene.

Superintendent Nicholas Picardo of the Hamlin Central School District released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Peters, a student, and offering condolences to his family and the school community. He confirmed that the district's crisis response team would be activated, providing support and counseling services to students and staff members. Counselors will be available throughout the day on Thursday, February 6th at the school. Additionally, extra counseling resources will be available at the junior/senior high school from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday for anyone needing further support. Superintendent Picardo urged the community to come together during this difficult time, emphasizing the school's strength as a united family
