NASCAR veteran says nearing all-time top 10 won’t change his plan to retire from full-time racing.
Denny Hamlin is only two victories shy of tying Kyle Busch for ninth on NASCAR’s Cup Series all-time win list, but he doesn’t foresee that statistic changing his plan to step out of his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota at the end of 2027.
“I’ve given Gibbs enough of a heads up that they’re working on the plans for beyond,” said Hamlin, who announced in August 2025 that he had signed a two-year contract extension with JGR. “So as long as those all go as planned, I would still assume the end of ’27 is it. Things always change. You just never know. But it’s what I would like. I don’t know all the moving parts and pieces beyond what you know. What happens between now and about 20 months from now, you just don’t know. But I thought that was a good enough timeline and enough heads up that they could make plans.” The 45-year-old Hamlin said he doesn’t want to get to the last half of his final season with the feeling that he can’t wait to get out of the race car. “If I could end on notes like this season is starting, then that would be a successful last year for me,” Hamlin said. In this year’s first six races, Hamlin has one victory, two top-five and three top-10 finishes. He is fourth in the driver standings.
