Hamas has offered to release 34 Israel i hostages held in Gaza in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners and a partial withdrawal of Israel i troops from parts of Gaza. The offer, confirmed by a Hamas official to NPR, is the most serious sign of progress towards a ceasefire in the 15-month Gaza war that began with a Hamas -led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. The list of hostages includes two U.S.
-Israeli dual citizens, five female soldiers, five civilian women, two infants, and 22 men. Some of those named may not be alive. The deal, under negotiation in Qatar, would only secure the release of a third of the approximately 100 hostages still held in Gaza. Young male soldiers, including dual U.S.-Israeli citizen Eden Alexander, would remain in Gaza. Hamas and other militant groups kidnapped 251 hostages to Gaza on October 7, 2023, according to the Israeli government. The following month, 105 hostages were released in a prisoner-for-hostage exchange between Israel and Hamas. Several others were rescued in Israeli military operations, and the bodies of 37 hostages have been recovered by Israeli troops. Israel has not yet agreed to a permanent end to its military offensive in Gaza, and Hamas will not release all of the hostages until an end to the war is guaranteed
