In a significant development, Hamas has proposed the release of 34 Israeli hostages held in Gaza, including two dual U.S. citizens, as part of a potential ceasefire deal with Israel. This offer, confirmed by a Hamas official, marks the most substantial progress towards ending the 15-month Gaza war since the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. The deal, currently under negotiation in Qatar, would involve the release of Palestinian prisoners by Israel and a partial troop withdrawal from Gaza.

The deal, under negotiation in Qatar, would only secure the release of a third of the approximately 100 hostages who remain in Gaza. Young male soldiers, including dual U.S.-Israeli citizen Eden Alexander, would remain in Gaza. Israel is calling on Hamas to divulge which of the hostages on the list are still alive, in order to advance talks on which Palestinian prisoners would be released in exchange. The Hamas official said Hamas would only reveal that information in exchange for concessions from Israel, which he did not elaborate on.
