Hall of Fame vote gives Billy Wagner hope of closing the deal in a year or two
While he waits at least another year for a call from Cooperstown, fireballing reliever Billy Wagner can take consolation in his 2021 induction into the Astros Hall of Fame.The former fireballing Astros closer fell short of induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday but sustained strong momentum that suggests he’ll be elected in either of his last two years on the ballot.
Rolen and Fred McGriff will be induced into the Hall of Fame on July 23 in Cooperstown, N.Y. The 16-member Contemporary Baseball Era unanimously elected McGriff to the Hall of Fame during the winter meetings in December. Wagner’s rise this year coincided with the removal of Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling from the ballot after their eligibility expired. Their absence, coupled with the lack of a bona fide first-time candidate on the ballot, allowed some voters who felt squeezed by the 10-player limit to vote for Wagner.
