Former Houston reliever Billy Wagner has comparable stats to other Baseball Hall of Famers and is seeing a rise in votes amid a changing electorate and competition.
Billy Wagner, who started his career with the Astros and pitched in Houston from 1995 to 2003, will have two years left on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot if he doesn't reach the 75 percent threshold for election Tuesday. For the first time in a decade, steroids and hate speech won’t dominate the Hall of Fame discourse. Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling fell off the ballot last year, removing some allure from Tuesday’s election reveal.
Fletcher is one of 28 voters who checked Wagner on their ballot this year after not voting for him last year. Among publicly revealed ballots, only Todd Helton has been added to more during this election cycle.revealed in tracker Ryan Thibodaux’s database “In Wagner and Helton, my ballot was a little crowded in recent years, and so I didn’t have a chance to vote for them every single year,” MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi said. “But I’ve always said that as they get closer to the 10 years on the ballot and closer to the 75 percent required to be elected that I would make sure that I made room for them on my ballot.”
